Tips for Packing Clothing for a Move

When it comes time to pack for your move, some items will be pretty self explanatory, while others such as your clothing collection will not. To assist you in this dilemma, we have provided some helpful packing tips for clothes below.

Take advantage of your dresser

One way to save on both time and space in your moving truck is to store your clothing in the dresser or wardrobe where you generally keep your clothes on a daily basis.
  • Before moving your dresser, remove the clothing-laden drawers and place them to the side
  • Move said dresser onto your moving truck, placing it against the side or the back of the truck's interior
  • Carry the drawers onto the truck and slide them back into the appropriate places in your dresser
  • Wrap the dresser in mover's plastic wrap to prevent the drawers from opening in transit
  • Cover the entire piece of furniture in moving blankets and secure the loose edges with packing tape

Bundle your hangers

One tip that's also a quick and easy moving hack involves bundling the clothing already on hangers in your closet and wrapping them in a garbage bag. To complete this hack:
  • Isolate a selection of clothing on hangers within your closet (note: do not choose more than will comfortably fit in one garbage bag)
  • Tear a small hole in the bottom of your chosen garbage bag
  • Grab the clothing you want to pack by the hangers and place the garbage bag over them, ensuring that the handle of the hangers stick out of the hole you made
  • Slide the bag over your clothing until they're completely covered
  • Tie the trash bag together at the bottom (the actual top of the garbage bag) with a rubber band, twist tie, in a knot around itself or with the provided drawstring
  • You can also cover your clothing by lowering it into the trash bag and tying it at the top around the hangers, but this technique may prove to be more difficult--particularly if you are wrapping your clothes on your own

Invest in a wardrobe box

For the more professional version of the above clothing hack, buy a wardrobe box--a tall box complete with clothing rod that is used by moving companies. You can purchase packing supplies directly from your movers, online or through a local hardware or office supply store depending on your preference.

Re-purpose your clothing

Have clothes lying around that you don't care about so much or that will be impossible to wrinkle during the moving process? Consider getting creative and using them as green packing materials!
  • Wrap fragile items in thick workout clothes in place of extra packing paper
  • Use socks to cushion belongings rather than crumpled packing paper which is more traditional
  • Socks can also be used to hold items inside of them (such as items you worry about getting scratched) if you are not concerned about your socks stretching out

Use what's on hand

Another way to go green during your move is to relocate your wardrobe in storage you already have in your possession. Rather than moving your clothes in moving boxes, place them in laundry baskets, luggage and suitcases since you were already planning to move these items regardless.

Hire a professional moving company

To avoid packing your clothing at all, put your entire wardrobe in the hands of professional movers, who can take care of all the hard stuff so you don't have to.
