Have to wrap and pack your plates for a move? Good news: plates are one of the easier items to pack up! Follow the proper wrapping and packing procedures below to protect them from damage during a move.
Supplies First, gather your supplies. You will want to have readily available:
- A sturdy moving box or dish pack box
- Packing paper or unprinted newsprint (printed newsprint can rub ink on your plates)
- Packing tape
- A permanent marker
The wrapping process Gathered your supplies? The next step is to wrap each plate individually.
- Place the plate. Lay the plate face down in the center of a couple sheets of packing paper or unprinted newsprint.
- Wrap the plate. Fold the edges of the paper over the lip of the plate, gathering everything in the center.
- Secure everything. Tape the edges down securely with packing tape.
- Repeat. Complete the above steps until all your plates are wrapped.
The packing process After your dishes are individually wrapped, you can start packing.
- Prep the box. Tape the bottom of your moving box shut with several pieces of packing tape--this will stop the bottom of the box from potentially breaking open, spelling catastrophe for your plates.
- Cushion. Place a layer of bubble wrap and another layer of crumpled packing paper in the bottom of your moving box to provide cushioning for your plates.
- Stack the plates. Stack each individually wrapped plate in groups of three, keeping plates of similar size together.
- Bundle the stack. Wrap each stack of plates with a final sheet of packing paper. Secure the edges with tape.
- Place the plates. Add these bundles of plates to your moving box, placing them on their edge as if you were storing records. Keep similarly sized plates together.
- Fill in the empty space. Place crumpled packing paper in any space left between the sides of your plates and the box. Also add crumpled paper to the top. The goal is to limit shifting while the plates are in transit.
- Seal the box. Securely seal the lid of the box with packing tape.
- Label it. Write on the box that the contents are "FRAGILE" and note which way the box must be held and loaded during the move, adding: "THIS SIDE UP" with an arrow pointing toward the top. Also be sure to write where to place the box inside your new home and what is inside the box.
TIP: For added protection, separate the individually wrapped plates with a dish pack box. Dish packs can be purchased from your moving company, a packing product supplier or even a local chain retail store.
