Knives (particularly sharp ones, read: any other knives than butter ones) will be dangerous to handle during the wrapping and packing portion of your move, and the unpacking and unwrapping process as well.
However, if you exercise caution and follow the necessary procedures, neither you, nor anyone else will be injured in or after the move. And your knives will make it out in one piece too.
Supplies
To wrap and pack your knives safely, and to prevent them from getting nicked or damaged during your move, you will need:
- A small moving box
- Unprinted packing paper
- Bubble wrap
- Packing tape
- A permanent marker
Packing and wrapping
To get your knives safely packed and wrapped, use extreme caution when preparing them for their upcoming trip to your new home.
- Reinforce your moving box. To prevent the moving box from opening and your knives stabbing your movers as they transport your belongings, reinforce the bottom of the box securely with packing tape.
- Add cushioning. After you have reinforced the bottom of the box, add a layer of crumpled packing paper to the bottom to provide cushioning during the move and to help prevent any knives from inadvertently breaking through the cardboard. For added protection, line the box with bubble wrap first.
- Steak knives require individual wrapping in a sheet of packing paper. On the end of several sheets of packing paper, place a single steak knife. Roll the packing paper sheets over and under the knife. Add another knife (facing in the same direction) next to the wrapped one and roll it with the rolled sheet of packing paper, repeating the process until all your steak knives are wrapped. Tuck in the ends of the packing paper and wrap the whole bundle in bubble wrap followed by one final layer of packing paper. Secure with tape.
- Butter knives can be wrapped as you would wrap your cutlery, in secured bundles of four.
- Larger, sharper knives will require being taken care of individually in a layer of packing paper, bubble wrap and a top layer of packing paper.
- Label your knives. As you finish wrapping each knife or bundle of knives, mark the packing paper clearly with the word, "KNIVES" and draw an arrow pointing toward the sharp end. This will help to prevent injury, especially if you are not the one who ends up unpacking the knife box.
- Box them up. After your knives are all wrapped, it's time to pack them away. Add them to the prepared box, using crumpled packing paper to fill in any empty spaces left once all the knives are inside.
- Seal and label your box. Finally, once all your knives are packed, securely seal the top of the moving box with packing tape. Clearly label on the top of the box and several sides what is inside and include a note to handle the box with caution. Also note where in your new home the box should go.
Knives in a knife block
If your knives are already inside a knife or butcher's block, the wrapping and packing process will be different.
- Apply packing tape from one side of the block, over the knife handles and secure on the other side to prevent the knives from slipping out of the knife block during the move
- Use several pieces of tape to secure the handles from different angles
- Wrap the whole shebang in bubble wrap and secure with more tape
- Add the entire bundle to the bottom of a moving box containing other kitchen items
