Fancy a spot of tea to unwind after a move? Make sure to follow these tips for wrapping and packing your tea set so it survives the journey and you can reward yourself with a cuppa in your new home.

Supplies

To safely wrap and pack your tea set, you will want to gather the necessary supplies. These include:
  • A sturdy moving box
  • Packing paper or unprinted newsprint (avoid printed newsprint which can rub off onto your tea set)
  • Bubble wrap
  • Packing tape
  • A permanent marker

Wrapping the tea cups

To maximize your time, wrap all your tea cups in one go, doing the same afterward with the saucers.
  • Stuff the cups. Stuff the interior of your tea cups with packing paper or unprinted newsprint.
  • Wrap the handles. Place a piece of balled up packing paper in the space between your tea cup's handle and the cup. Wrap the stuffed handle in bubble wrap and tape it in place.
  • Wrap the cup. Place your cup on the corner of several sheets of packing paper and roll the paper over and under your tea cup until you get to the end of the sheet. Tuck the excess paper around the base and over the lip of the cup.
  • Wrap again. For extra precaution, wrap this entire bundle once more in bubble wrap and a final sheet of packing paper.
  • Repeat. Repeat this process for each tea cup until they're all wrapped.

Wrapping the saucers

Now that the hard part is over, it's time to wrap your saucers.

Place your saucer face down on a couple sheets of unprinted newsprint or packing paper. Fold the edges of the paper into the center of the saucer and secure the edges together with packing tape. Complete this step until all your saucers are individually wrapped.

Once all your saucers are wrapped, separate them into groups of three. Wrap each stack of three with a couple sheets of packing paper, taping it in place.

Wrapping the tea pot

Once the tea cups and saucers are done it's time to move onto the final piece: your tea pot!
  • Stuff the interior. Stuff the interior cavity with crumpled pieces of packing paper.
  • Wrap the handle. Place a crumpled piece of packing paper in the space between the tea pot's handle and the pot itself. Wrap the handle in bubble wrap and secure with tape.
  • Wrap the pot. Set the tea pot down on several sheets of packing paper and fold the edges over the lip and into the interior of the pot.
  • Wrap again. Wrap your tea pot bundle in bubble wrap and a final sheet of packing paper or newsprint.
  • Wrap the lid. Wrap the tea pot lid in packing paper and finish off with another layer of bubble wrap for added protection. Tape the wrapped lid to the top of the wrapped pot so they don't get separated during the packing process.

Packing your tea set

After your entire tea set is wrapped, you can pack it all up.
  • Secure the moving box. Tape the bottom of your moving box shut to prevent it from breaking open during your move.
  • Cushion the bottom. Place a layer of bubble wrap and another layer of crumpled packing paper in the bottom of your moving box to provide additional cushioning for your tea set.
  • Stack the saucers first. Add the saucer bundles into the box first. Stand them on their edges inside the box, as you would if you were storing records.
  • Divide the box. To save space, place a cardboard divider snug against your saucers to keep them upright in the box. In the open space next to your packed saucers you can place your tea cups.
  • Add the cups. Layer your wrapped tea cups in the cushioned box with the lip side facing down. Place the cups snugly next to each other will all the handles facing in the same direction to save space.
  • Add another divider. If there is room remaining, add your tea pot with a cardboard divider to separate it from the other items. You can also pack it separately in a small box.
  • Fill the empty space. Place crumpled packing paper in spaces left between the tea cups and around your tea pot. Top the box with a final layer of crumpled packing paper.
  • Seal the box. Seal the lid of the box closed with packing tape.
  • Label it. Write on the box that the contents are "FRAGILE" and note which way the box must be held and loaded during the move, adding: "THIS SIDE UP" with an arrow pointing toward the top. Also be sure to write where to place the box inside your new home and add that it contains your tea set.

TIP: For extra protection, separate the individually wrapped tea cups with a cell box. You can purchase them from your moving company, a packing product supplier or make one yourself. Using a cell box? Pack your cups separately from the saucers and tea pot!
