Relocation can be a tedious and overwhelming yet important aspect of your life. From selecting a moving company, to setting up furniture in your new home, to becoming a part of your new community, relocation can be adventurous as new vistas wait to be explored. Here are some of the professional relocation tips you can follow when you make your next move. Tip #1 - make a moving file A moving file contains all the information regarding your move that can be helpful to have. For example, moving company estimates, receipts, inventory of your items, home sale papers and escrow paperwork. An accordion-style file folder instead of an open manila folder should be used for this purpose as the chance of things falling out/losing them is lower.Tip #2 Get estimates
Before hiring a mover you should check with the area's Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints were lodged against that company. It is a good practise to take estimates from at least three movers.
Tip #3 Move during the off-season
The period from May 15 through August 31 is the peak moving season. Higher charges are applicable during these months and if you can wait until Labour Day, then you are at a better advantage and may end up paying a lot less for your move.
Tip #4 Create "open me first" boxes for rooms
Designate one or two boxes for every room as "Open Me First" boxes and pack them with the items that you will be needing first at your new location.
Tip #5 Remember that less is more
Packing your items can be used as a way to de-clutter your belongings and get rid of items that you no longer use or that can be easily replaced at your new home through donations, a garage sale or to a recycling center. It will also help you save on your moving expenditures.
Tip #6 Abbreviate room names
Different boxes for a room should be labelled with an abbreviated name followed by a number. For example 'BDR2-5' means second bedroom fifth box. This method helps you keep track of your belongings.
Tip #7 Make a digital inventory
A digital inventory of your belongings with a digital camera or a camcorder establishes the status of your belongings. This is especially useful during the insurance claim process in case of damage or loss.
Tip #8 Create a floor plan
A floor plan of your new home depicting where everything has to be placed will help your movers relocate your belongings in an efficient manner. This will also help you save money and time.
Tip #9 Put together a first night kit
Make a first night kit containing a flashlight, towels, blankets, toiletries, coffeemaker, can opener, easy-to-cook canned food, paper plates, trash bags and toilet paper. This kit should be packed and kept with you in the car. This will be especially useful for the first day after you move into your new home.
Tip #10 Pack a mini-vacation suitcase
A suitcase for a three-day vacation for each member of the family that is moving should be packed and kept separately from the other items to be moved. We recommend packing it in your car. These suitcases should contain a change of clothes, medications and toiletries that you will need for the first few days after moving. |
