In any person's life, relocation can be both tedious and adventurous, as it involves uprooting one's life from one place and starting fresh at another place. A new job, new friends and a new place to live reveals the adventurous side of moving.

Moving services include a list of services that help you in relocation. Some of the options include:
  • Freight service
  • Full service moving
  • Packing services
  • Pickup and delivery service
  • Storage service
  • Auto transport

Freight service

A service where a moving company will transport your belongings from one place to another while you do the packing, loading and unloading. The moving company usually provides basic coverage of $10 per pound and you have to buy additional insurance coverage for the protection of your goods.

Depending on the size of your shipment, freight service is one of two types:
  • Full-truckload freight - the trailer is dropped off at your home and usually 24 to 48 hours time is given to load your belongings
  • Less-than-truckload freight - your goods are placed along with other people's shipments and usually take a longer time to get delivered

Full-service moving

A full-service move comprises everything from planning, packing, disassembling of your furniture and loading, to the unloading and reassembling of your furniture. It allows you to relax while the movers take care of everything. It is more expensive than other services and caution should be exercised while employing a moving company.

Tasks like the hooking up of your appliances and carrying of your goods up a flight of stairs also incurs additional expenditure.

Packing services

One of the most important aspects of your move is packing and unpacking. You can hire a packing service to do your complete home or one specific room like the kitchen.

Most of the full-service moving companies offer packing and unpacking services. A third-party packing service can also be hired as they charge less than the moving companies. The advantage of hiring professionals is your fragile items are well taken care of.

Pickup and delivery service

Pickup and delivery, as the name implies, is a service where you pack all of your goods while the movers load them, drive them to the destination and unload them all for you. This, when compared to a full-service move, is less expensive.

Storage services

Storage services involve the renting of space for keeping your belongings safe. Storage units are highly varied from mini storage to seasonal storage. These facilities are climate controlled with state-of-the-art security systems. Most moving companies also provide storage services.

Auto transport

Auto transport will ship your car from your old home to your new home. It is a good practise to check the credentials of your auto transporter before hiring. Auto transport has many advantages, as it reduces the depreciation of your car, cuts down on the wear and tear and saves on energy.

Based on the distance of the move, the following options are also available:

Local moves

A move within a province or under a certain number of kilometres. Before hiring a mover, check for their credentials in your area's local Better Business Bureau. These moves are typically charged by the hour.

Long distance move

These moves are across province lines and require a lot of paperwork, preparation and time. Long distance moves are charged by a combination of volume, weight and distance. You need to be careful about insurance coverage as most moving companies only give basic coverage that is approximately $10 per pound. You might want to consider taking additional coverage to protect your belongings.

International moves

The world has taken the form of a global village where global barriers melt and international moves have become the norm of the day. An international move is a complex process where custom rules and global regulations come into play. You should exercise caution while choosing a moving company and check whether it possesses a Freight Forwarder permit.
