During Your International Move To-Do List

International moving can get extremely stressful. This is why preparing properly and organizing your move in advance can pay huge dividends come moving day. If you've taken care of all the important details leading up to your move, then you will have a lot less to worry about on the big day -- and less stress equates to a successful moving day. So, assuming you've checked off everything on your Before the Move to-do list, you can get down to business and check off these During the Move items.

Coordinate with neighbours

Organization is key when it comes to conquering an international move. Notify your neighbours about your move and let them know when your movers will be arriving on moving day. This way, you can make sure there is enough space for the professional movers to park their vehicle(s) and complete the packing and loading process unhindered.

Pack an essentials kit

With any move, you want to pack a "survival" kit of some kind with everything you'll need when you arrive at your new home. This is even more important with an international move. If you are traveling overseas, you'll need access to essential items during transit and once you arrive at your destination.

Here are some items you'll want to include:
  • Cash
  • Toiletries
  • Towels
  • Extra clothes
  • Water
  • Snacks
  • First aid kit
  • Prescription and allergy medications
  • Cellphone
  • Phone and laptop chargers

Sort keys

Again, this is part of staying organized during your move. Differentiate the keys you're taking with you from the keys you're leaving behind. For example, make sure you take any and all car keys with you, but be sure to leave behind any keys to your old home. You won't have any use for those in your new country, and your old home's new residents will most likely change the locks anyway.

Supervise your movers

Don't get in the way of the moving company you hired, but be sure to keep an eye on the movers during your move. Make sure they're taking care of your possessions and instruct them how to handle special items. Remember to label fragile items as such so the movers know when they're dealing with something valuable and/or delicate.

Keep track of inventory

As your movers pack your belongings and load their truck(s), you'll want to keep track of everything being loaded. This way, there won't be any confusion when they are all set to leave. Staying on top of the inventory will minimize the chances that something of yours gets left behind during your move. Of course, once your shipment is in transit, the responsibility falls on the moving company and the shipper. But it is important to worry only about what you can control in these instances. Do what you can to make sure you've covered all of your bases, and everybody else should take care of their parts.

Staying organized during your move

Now that you know what needs to be done both before moving day and during your move, you can take the steps to ensure a successful international move for you and your family. You have all of the skills and tools at your disposal, and with the right preparation, you can organize a seamless transition into your new home.
