Choosing a university is one of the biggest decisions of your life -- sweating picking the right one? Follow these tips to find the college for you!
Choose a major
A great way to limit your choice of university is to decide what your major. Since different colleges have varying strengths, research which universities have the best programs to serve your educational requirements.
Unsure of your exact major? Focus on a particular area of study or continue your search with other considerations (more below).
Think about costs
While you're not expected to pay for college outright, loans and scholarships can only take you so far. Consider the kind of debt you'll be accruing in the future and narrow down your choice of university based on pricing. In addition to classes, factor in the cost of books as well as housing and other living expenses if applicable.
TIP: Get an idea of the average student debt by province when considering a university.
Other considerations
- Location – Want to stay close to home or near family and friends? Have to live with your parents to save money? Look at colleges in your area or choose a province with lower student debt (link above).
- Living situation - The university campus, dorms and the surrounding neighbourhood should all be taken into account.
- Reputation – Are you looking for a school that favours education? How about ones with a lot of student activities? A vibrant nightlife? Narrow down your options to schools that will fit your personality.
- Rules - Different universities have different rules and some of these -- such as campus and dorm rules -- may help make your decision.
Take a tour
Once you've narrowed down your choices based on the above factors, take a tour of the remaining university campuses and talk to current students. The best way to choose the right college for you is to see and experience it for yourself. Get a feel for the buildings, the dorms, the students and faculty, and even the nearby community before deciding if it's the university for you. |
