Better Know a Province: Alberta

Live in or thinking about moving to Canada's western province of Alberta? Here's a run down on the fourth-largest Canadian province.

Alberta is the fourth-most populated province and the most populous of the three prairie provinces. A landlocked province, Alberta shares a border with one US state: Montana.

The area -- which has one of the strongest economies in the world -- is named for Princess Louise Caroline-Alberta, the fourth daughter of Victoria, Queen of Canada.

With warm summers and cold winters (which may be interrupted by warm, chinook winds), Alberta boasts a dry continental climate, numerous rivers and lakes, a boreal forest, a shortgrass prairie and badlands that hold the Dinosaur Provincial Park.

Need something to brag about? Albertans are the lowest-taxed citizens in Canada, because Alberta is the only province without a provincial sales tax. Alberta is also the only province with a 10 percent flat tax for personal income taxes.

The Alberta city of Calgary is also famous for its annual Stampede, the biggest rodeo festival named "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth."
