Better Know a Province: Nova Scotia

Considering a move to Nova Scotia? Do you already live there? Now may be the time to brush up on your knowledge of the maritime province, especially if you plan on relocating there.

Named in 1621, Nova Scotia means New Scotland in Latin and is referred to as Alba Nuadh in Scottish Gaelic.

While Nova Scotia -- which makes up Atlantic Canada -- is the second smallest province in Canada, it is also the second most-densely populated region.

Surrounded almost completely by the sea (hence its license plate moniker "Canada's Ocean Playground"), the climate of Nova Scotia is considered to be maritime with winters being cold enough to be classified as continental.

A prime destination for paleontologists and other scientists, Nova Scotia boasts an abundance of fossil bearing rock formations, including the Joggins Fossil Cliffs on the Bay of Fundy. Unless you have a permit, fossil removal is forbidden from these sites.

In addition to its fossils, Nova Scotia is also known for being an artistic and cultural centre, with several theatre companies, a symphony, art galleries, public art sculptures and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University as well as the home of the Halifax donair (a variant of the doner kebab) and garlic fingers (a pizza-type snack without tomato sauce).
