Hopping on a plane for a long distance move? The federal government imposed tax on Canadian airports will definitely not help keep your moving costs low.
Canadian airport tax
Taxes on Canadian airports rank the highest in the world, with Canada landing in spot 130 out of 138 countries in the World Economic Forum’s Travel And Tourism Competitiveness Report.
For reference, Transport Canada collects a whopping $313 million in taxes from airports annually, which makes up 12 percent of the airports' total revenues.
The costliness of these taxes and rents imposed on Canadian airlines in turn affects customers, who are turning to U.S. airports for more affordable ticket options.
It is estimated that around five million Canadians fly out of the U.S. each year, totalling $2.4 billion in revenue loss which costs Canada 9,000 jobs annually.
