Cut Energy Costs in Each Room

Energy costs can be high in the summer – and year round for that matter, so it’s always a good idea to do your best to try and cut costs wherever you can. Here are a few tips to get you started in each room of your home.

Attic
Make sure there is proper insulation in your attic (if you have one). A lot of heat is lost through attic ceilings when they’re not properly insulated. Check what type of insulation materials are in your attic and if they’re still in good condition or if it is at a proper thickness. If it’s not, add a few more inches of insulation to prevent heat from escaping.

Living rooms and bedrooms

The easiest way to save energy in these rooms it to turn. Everything. Off. Phone chargers, TVs, game consoles – they’re all sucking energy. When you leave for the day make sure that these items are turned off completely and not just in sleep mode. You could take it a step further and turn off the power strip (provided it won’t do any damage or reset your alarm clock) to be extra sure.

Kitchen
Kitchens are constantly using energy throughout the day – the cooking cleaning and washing needs to get done, but there are more efficient ways to do it. When doing the dishes by hand, use the tub method instead of running the water the entire time. This will save an exponential amount of water each time you wash dishes. If you’re utilizing your dishwasher, only run it when it’s full. There’s no need to run the dishwasher if you’re only washing three forks and a plate.

If possible, invest in energy efficient appliances. These are designed to help save you money in the long run! If your washer and dryer are in the kitchen, use the same rule of thumb as the dishwasher – only when it’s full or when you have an entire load of laundry to do.

Once a few or all of these tips are in place you could start to see differences in your monthly energy costs that will add up throughout the year!

What will you use all that extra money for now?
