Dollar-Store DIY Projects

When thunderstorms are coming your way and you can't go outside to play what are you going to do? Head to your nearest dollar store, that's what!

In every dollar store you can find a treasure trove of craft supplies for simple projects that can be done on a rainy afternoon. So spend an afternoon making a few of these dollar-store DIY projects and add a bit of interest around your home!

Cupcake stand

A cupcake stand is super simple to make with items from the dollar store, and you'll only need to spend AT MOST $3-4.

While you're in the store grab a plate or two (depending on how many tiers you'd like) and a few candlesticks, again at whatever height you'd like. Now, heat up your trusty glue gun and glue the first candle stick to the bottom of the first plate and set it aside to dry for a few minutes while you glue the other candlestick and plate together. You could be finished here and have two separate cake stands but if you're after a tiered look, glue them together.

Once the stands are complete, you can spray paint them all one colour or go crazy with 15 different hues - it's really up to you.

Bonus: You can use either version as a jewelry or cosmetic stand.

Hand-drawn hanging plates
Wow your friends and family with your artistic abilities and decorating skills with a few hand-drawn plates hanging on the walls.

You'll need a few basic white ceramic plates and a black sharpie. Begin drawing designs on your plates with the sharpie and allow them to dry before touching them so they don't smudge. Once the designs are as you like them, you'll need to bake the plates in the oven at 350 degrees F for about 20-30 minutes to set the sharpie design into the mug and to make it dishwasher safe.

You can personalize mugs, plates or anything else that you come across so long as it's ceramic.

Add some sparkle to your candles
You can get all the emergency candles you need at the dollar store - long tapers, short votives, but the ones you'll need for this project are the tall ones in glass jars.

Using some tape, make a few stripes around the candle jar in a design you'd like. You can even use rubber bands or a length of string for varying thickness. Once the stripes are in place you can use spray paint, glitter glass paint or even nail polish to paint the jar. Try your best to be gentle with the tape so that it doesn't shift and make sure you allow everything to dry before removing the tape or whatever masking material you used.

Then go ahead and light that candle!

Do you have some DIY projects that you'd like to try?
