Healthy Snack Ideas for Moving Day

Moving day is busy, stressful, and hectic--the last thing you want to be doing while overseeing your relocation is cooking, making sandwiches, or other meal preparations. Rather than hitting the drive-thru, check out these simple and delicious snack ideas to stay satiated and healthy during your move.

Trail mix

This simple, healthy and easy to transport snack is perfect for moving day. Since it's a dry snack, you can easily throw it into a zip-lock bag and take it on your car trip, or eat it throughout the day as you pack, load the truck, or oversee the movers' work. Simply combine a mixture of healthy nuts (no peanuts), seeds and dried fruit for a perfect mixture of sweet and salty.

Hummus and veggies
Everyone's favourite creamy chickpea dip is a nutritious and delicious snack that's easy to eat--even during the chaos of moving day. The night before your move, spoon your favourite hummus variety into plastic or glass jars until they are half full. Chop veggies (peppers, carrots, or celery) into strips and stick them length-wise into the hummus. Screw the lids onto your jars and refrigerate. If you are packing your refrigerator to take with you during your move, you may have to keep these in a cooler or make them in the morning. Hummus can stay out for several hours, but overnight they should be kept cold. This snack is easy to enjoy while the movers pack up your home, or on the road--no utensils needed!

Granola or protein bars
There's nothing easier than throwing several granola or protein bars into your bag for car-snacking, or quickly consuming mid-move to keep your energy up. Be sure to look for varieties with low sugar content--many granola bars pack in the added sugars, resulting in a less-than-healthy snack.

Yogurt
While yogurt may be a little more difficult to eat during your move (you'll need a spoon), you can pre-pack delicious and healthy concoctions in advance to keep clean up minimal. Fill a glass or plastic jar with either plain or pre-flavoured yogurt, and add berries, crushed nuts, or low-sugar granola on top. Close the jars, and keep refrigerated until it's time to eat. If you're taking them on the road, keep them in a cooler to stay cold. Once you've devoured the jar's contents, simply place your dirty spoon inside the jar and replace the lid for an easy clean up.

Hard-boiled eggs/egg-white cups
Eggs are not only a healthy and tasty breakfast food--they're a great, high protein snack, too! Hard boiled eggs are easy to make the night before your move and eat on the go--no utensils needed! If you want to get a little more creative (and eliminate excess fats) you can also try baked egg white cups. The night before your move, simply spray a muffin tin with no-stick cooking spray, and fill each cup with liquid egg whites, pre-sauteed chopped veggies (spinach, mushrooms, onions, peppers, asparagus) and a light sprinkle of cheese (shredded cheddar, mozzarella, or feta crumbles all work great). Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and bake the egg white cups for about 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown. Allow to cool, and pack in plastic zip-lock bags for easy snacking and transport on moving day!
