Tips For Moving in Together

Moving in together can be a design challenge. Combining the pieces that you love so that they look well with the things they love can lead more than a few heated discussions. “Emotions get really high when it comes to your belongings if the person you’re choosing to spend the rest of your life with doesn’t love what you love,” said stylist Marianne Canada, host of the “HGTV Crafternoon” web series. Even when you're to accommodate to the other person's taste you may lose some of the things you love in the process. Here at TopMoving, we understand the difficulties of moving in with another person so we've compiled a few tips to help ease the transition.

Claim Your Favorites

Each person in the relationship is bound to carry over some of their favorite pieces of furniture or décor that the other may not entirely agree with. Try to come to a compromise on three to four pieces that you each believe must stay in the home for the sake of favourites. Once you've each selected the essentials, the rest are open discussion as to what will become of them. Even if you don't initially agree with them, consider giving the pieces a new upholstery or painting, see if there could be anywhere they could besides their previous resting place.

Go With Contrast

More than likely, you and your partner's furniture isn't going to be coordinated with the colour of your rooms straight away. To combat this, consider repainting the room a neutral colour such as white or an off white with a shade of colour. Then take a look at the remaining furniture and see if it balances with the colours of the room. Remember, contrast can accent a room very well. Couples merging households already have a leg up design wise, because they have the opportunity to mix and match their pieces into a wide variety of style and space.

Try New Locations

Placement is key in interior design. That dresser you had in your bedroom in your old home, may be the touch your new living room. That recliner that used to be in the living, might find its new home in the bedroom for some late night reading. Don't become to fixed with having furniture in only one room, and watch your home get that much more cozy.

Shop Together

After you've rearranged, repainted, upholstered all your old furniture maybe there's still something missing that neither of you own. Now it's time to shop but shop together. By shopping together, both you and your partner have a better chance on agreeing something you'd like to see in your new home. This includes artwork and accessories. If you both find yourselves struggling making a decision, consider asking a third opinion such as a friend or an interior decorator.
