After Your Move, Diy
As temperatures begin to drop and the frigidity of winter creeps in, staying warm in our homes becomes imperative. However, you don’t have to crank up the thermostat to heat your home this winter–stay toasty and save money with these helpful tips.
Don't block your heat sources
While you may be tempted to cozy up on a couch directly in front of a heat vent, your furniture is blocking the air flow and making your home colder. Make sure to arrange your furniture away from heat vents, radiators, space heaters, and any other heat sources.
Change furnace filters regularly
Replace or clean furnace filters at least once a month during the winter to ensure your furnace is heating your home effectively. You could also switch to permanent filters, which trap more dirt and debris and reduce bacteria, mold and pollen more efficiently.
Eliminate drafts
Drafts waste energy and increase your bills as hot air is wasted through the cracks and crevices of your home. Plug up gaps by wedging towels or fabric under doors or windows where heat escapes. Though somewhat unsightly, it can stop the problem temporarily until you can find a permanent solution--such as weather-stripping doors, sealing windows and applying insulating window film. You could also try hanging insulated curtains to reduce drafts.
Install storm doors and windows
Increase energy efficiency up to 45 percent by installing storm doors and windows. The extra protection will insulate your home from the harsh, cold winds of winter, greatly reduce drafts and limit cold air infiltration.
