5 DIY Car Maintenance Projects

via PexelsIt is important to perform the proper maintenance on your car every so often. Many drivers hesitate with car care because they often don't want to spend the money or have to go all the way to the mechanic or dealership to get the maintenance done. Well, there is a simple solution to this problem: do it yourself! Here are five DIY car maintenance projects that will help you save money and time because you can do them all by yourself.

1. Replace cabin air filters

You want to be able to breathe while you drive, right? To make sure your automobile has clean, circulated air in its cabin, replace your cabin air filter every year or so. This will make the car more breathable for you and your passengers, especially limiting the amount of dust and allergens that enter your vehicle.

2. Replace engine air filters
You're not the only one who needs fresh air while your car is running. Your engine requires clean air to run properly, so be sure to replace your air filter about once every year as well, or more frequently if you drive a lot. Clogged or dirty air filters can result in reduced engine performance, which affects acceleration and fuel efficiency. If you drive in tough conditions like heavy traffic, you'll want to purchase a more durable air filter for your engine. According to an article from PR Newswire, "Changing an air filter requires no more skill than hanging pictures around the house." So, get to it!

3. Change oil
This is another DIY project that has to do with your car's engine. Be sure to choose the right oil for your vehicle, factoring in your driving habits and typical driving conditions. It might be best to seek a professional's opinion on what type of oil is ideal for your vehicle, but the car maintenance itself can be done at home.

4. Change transmission fluid
Use your owner's manual to determine the interval at which to change the transmission fluid, as well as the specifications for the product needed. The harsher your typical driving conditions, the more frequently you will have to change your transmission fluid.

5. Replace spark plugs
Spark plugs are supposed to last a long time, but sometimes they get damaged due to harsh conditions. Damaged plugs can cause problems such as engine misfires and poor fuel economy, so it is important to monitor their condition. Luckily, this is a quick and easy job. With a few tools, you can change one plug at a time (so not to mix up the wires), replacing the old, worn spark plugs with new ones from your local automobile store.
