Meet Van Girls, London's First All-Female Moving Company

Founded in 2011 by Emma Lanman, Van Girls is the first moving company of its kind in London. Lanman quit her job at the fire brigade and opted to start her own business. The business? An all-female moving company, to appeal to women who might be more inclined to hire other women to get the job done carefully and efficiently.

Van Girls is a unique moving company, providing that feminine touch for each and every move. Whether it involves packing fragile items or loading heavy washing and drying machines onto the truck, these ladies can get the job done. Lanman says that she used to see people get intrigued and excited about female firefighters, how it was interesting to see a woman doing a "man's job." So, the moving industry seemed like the perfect fit.

But while Van Girls does get a lot of business from all-female households and single women in London, the moving company gets a decent amount of male customers as well. Most people are surprised at how well the female workers handle heavy items, especially when loading and unloading them from the removal vans. One employee named Ellisha insists, "It's not as hard as people think it is. It's actually quite easy." In fact, Lanman's Van Girls tend to be stronger than most of the men who hire them to perform their moves.

Since the moving company has grown and the word has spread, more and more men are attempting to work for Van Girls. Lanman claims she will stick to the all-female service structure to preserve the company's vision, but she is open to hiring men for Van Girls office positions. She states, sarcastically, "That's part of the dream: to have male receptionists."
