Western Canada is Likely to Have a White Christmas

As the "snowiest country in the world" many Canadians are wondering if there will be a White Christmas this year, and CBC News is reporting that in some parts it might be. 

There are only two days left before Christmas and Environment Canada has also been wondering if there will be snow, so the weather agency took the records from more than 40 major cities over the past 60 years and crunched some numbers. 

David Phillips is the senior climatologist at Environment Canada and says, "Canada is the snowiest country in the world. You know what a white Christmas is in England? It's if someone sees a flake of snow." 

But don't worry Canada, Phillips has figured out the probabilities of a white Christmas and here's what parts of the country can expect on December 25 this year. 

In the east

Phillips says that Eastern Canada will mostly have a green Christmas while Western Canada can expect it to be white. He added that no one is expecting a "perfect" Christmas which is defined as more than two centimetres of snow on the ground and in the air on Christmas Day, by the weather agency. 

Cities in the Prairie provinces and the B.C. interior can also expect a white Christmas. 

Winnipeg had a "perfect" Christmas last year, and is currently in the middle of one of its warmest winters, but Phillips thinks things may still work out in the city's favour. Winnipeg has a 98 percent chance of a white Christmas, historically, so its chances are looking good. 

Vancouver and Victoria, unlike the rest of B.C. have "no chance" of snow this Christmas, even though both cities only have about a 10 percent chance of a white Christmas, it has happened before. In 2008, both cities' residents woke up to 41 centimetres of snow on the ground on Christmas and was the whitest Christmas that year. In fact, the amount of snow that fell was more than the North Pole, Phillips noted.
