Common Reasons to Move

What Are Good Reasons to Move?

There are many reasons to consider moving. However, it is a major life change that requires significant thought to avoid regret later.

Are you moving for the right reasons? For your move to be successful, make sure it is the right choice and is not made hastily.

Did you get a new job offer?
A promising job opportunity is a common and wise reason to move. If you have been offered a new position too far from your current location to commute, consider the following before you accept:
  • Is your employer offering a RELO package (compensation for moving costs, temporary housing, etc.)?
  • Will you be able to leave your family and friends behind?
  • Are your spouse and children behind the decision?
  • Is the salary sufficient? The cost of living in your new city may be higher, making what appears to be a pay raise less significant—or even null.
Do you need a larger home?
If your family is growing and your current home doesn’t comfortably accommodate everyone, you may be in the market for a larger home. Before making the decision to upgrade, there are several things to consider:
  • How is the current market in your neighbourhood?
  • Will you be able to sell your home easily and for a worthy price?
  • Can you afford not only buying a larger home, but the added utility and maintenance costs?
Do you need a neighbourhood change?
Starting a family? Getting sick of urban hustle and bustle? A change of scenery or desire for a different lifestyle often prompts people to move. Make a list of all the qualities you want for your new neighbourhood–such as low crime rates, good schools, and scenic views–and do thorough research to find the optimal place within your budget.

Are you moving for love?
Relocating to be close to a romantic partner is common, but a hefty choice to make. Leaving your city, job, and proximity to friends and family for one person is not a decision to be taken lightly. Consider all consequences of your move before making the commitment.

Do you want to buy your first home?
If you’re renting and ready to buy a house, this is a sensible reason to relocate. There is a lot to think about before buying a home–your budget, what you want in a home, and what you want in a neighbourhood. Contact a realtor to help you find homes that fit your needs and carefully calculate what you can afford for a mortgage before signing any papers.
