Creative Packing Hacks for Your Move

Often the most dreaded aspect of a move, sorting through and packing up your belongings is a tiresome and frustrating task. Luckily, there are many creative ways to make the process a little easier and less stressful. Read on for our uniquely useful tips to stay organized, save money and space, and pack your belongings for your move!

Colour-code your boxes

A great and simple way to stay organized when packing your belongings is colour-coding. Choose a specific colour for each room in your new house--such as red for the living room, blue for the kitchen, green for the bathroom, and yellow for the bedroom. Purchase coloured tape, stickers, or markers in those shades and use them to label each box with its corresponding room. Next, make a key with each room and designated colour and hang it in a prominent place for the movers to refer to as they bring boxes into your home.

Wrap fragile items in clothing or towels
Packing paper and bubble wrap can get expensive--save some money (and space) by using clothing, towels, linens and blankets to wrap and protect your delicate items. Larger wrappings like bed sheets and quilts can protect furniture, and smaller items like socks will protect glassware. Wrap plates in dish towels, roll up shirts and bath towels and stuff into boxes for padding--the possibilities are endless!

Protect your toiletries and cosmetics
Shampoos sometimes leak and cosmetic compacts can easily shatter during your move, causing a mess. Keep bottled toiletries and fragile makeup from ruining your other items with these simple packing hacks! Keep liquids like body wash, shampoo, and lotion in their bottles by removing the caps, covering with plastic wrap, and then replacing the caps. For eyeshadow and foundation compacts, press a cotton ball atop the pressed powder and close the lid. This will protect the makeup and prevent it from breaking and spilling coloured dust all over your other goods.

Make use of your existing containers
Decrease the amount of boxes you have to carry (and save money on their purchase) by using containers you already have lying around to pack your items. Hampers, pails, laundry bins, and decorative baskets are useful for packing a variety of items. Just remember if the container does not have a secure lid, seal it properly with tape so the contents don’t spill during transit.
