Enjoy Lobster at the Annual Shelburne County Lobster Festival This Weekend



Summer is just around the corner. One sign that summer is on its way is the annual Shelburne County Lobster Festival. The festival this year will take place from June 2 to June 5. It’s taking place in the lobster capital of Canada - Shelburne County. The festival was founded back in 1986 and is held every June to celebrate the end of the lobster season. This year celebrates 30 years of the lobster festival. 

Lobsterman's Challenge

Each year at the festival, they hold the Great Lobsterman’s Challenge. It’s a competition that puts lobster-ing skills to the test. There are various categories that contestants are judged in. This includes lobster banding, rope coiling, baiting a trap, and splicing lobsters. The grand prize this year is $500 cash. The admission to join is only $5.

Other activities
Along with the Great Lobsterman's Challenge, there is a variety of other activities to do this weekend.  Some activities include:
  • Boat Races
  • Seafood Chowder Cook-off
  • Lobster Shucking Contest
  • Soccer Tournament
  • Ball tournaments
  • 5KM Run
  • Fisherman’s church services
Community lobster meals
If you’re craving lobster, there will be community lobster meals at various places. These meals will allow everyone that attends to enjoy classic lobster dishes. These are the following locations and times:
  • June 2. Creamed Lobster Supper at Sandy Point Lighthouse Community Centre, Sandy Point from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • June 3. Boiled Lobster Supper at Sandy Point Lighthouse Community Centre, Sandy Point from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • June 4. Seal Island Breakfast at Island & Barrington Passage Fire Hall, Centreville, Cape Sable Island at 7 a.m.
  • June 4. Lobster Burgers & Dessert at Sandy Point Lighthouse Community Centre, Sandy Point at 12 p.m.
  • June 5. Lobster Burgers & Dessert at Sandy Point Lighthouse Community Centre, Sandy Point at 11 a.m.
  • June 5. Lobster Chowder Luncheon at West Green Harbour Fire Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • June 5. Boiled & Creamed Lobster Supper at Jordan Bay School House Community Hall from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • June 5. Seafood Chowder Supper at Lockeport Fire Hall from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
If you love lobster and looking for something to do this weekend, you should swing by the Shelburne County Lobster festival. With a variety of activities over the course of a few days, you definitely find something to do. The lobster festival will also help you get into the summer mode. Just remember to bring a bib and lobster crackers!
