Helpful Tips for Your Autumn Move

Planning a move this fall season? While peak moving season is winding down (most relocations occur during the spring and summer), the fall is actually a great time to move! There's no sweltering heat and movers charge lower premiums due to lack of demand during the autumn months. However, there are still some important things to keep in mind when planning your move this fall--read on for tips to make your moving experience a breeze.

Clear walkways and stairs of leaves and debris

As leaves begin to fall and accumulate on your walkways and front stairs, they create slipping hazards. Be sure to rake your lawn and clear all paths to your home of leaves, twigs and other debris. Fallen leaves, especially when wet, are extremely slippery and will increase the chance of falls and injuries when you or your movers are trekking in and out of your home with heavy boxes and bulky furniture in tow.

Wear weather-appropriate clothing
Fall weather is tricky and often unpredictable. The morning of your move could be chilly and windy, but come afternoon the weather may turn hot and humid. Because of fluctuating temperatures, it's a good idea to dress in layers. Also remember to wear sturdy, non-slip shoes to prevent slipping on leaves you missed while sweeping.

Protect your floors
Fall is a sloppy time of year. Keep the movers from tracking mud, bits of leaves, and other debris into your home by properly protecting your floors. Lay down cardboard, plastic sheets or drop cloths as a shield from dirty boots and sludge. If you are hiring movers, they should provide these materials for you–be sure to ask about their procedure for floor protection when receiving your estimate.

Have kids? Get ready for their new school
Moving to a brand new town? If you children are starting the semester at a new school, they may be anxious and nervous about the change. Help ease their fears by contacting the school in advance and scheduling a tour of the facility--becoming familiar with the school’s layout and possibly meeting their teachers will make the transition just a tiny bit easier.
