Keep in Touch after Moving

Moving is overwhelming on many levels, but what many actually dread the most about the moving process are the emotional aspects of life after the move. Saying goodbye to family and friends is one of the hardest challenges of moving long distance, and staying in touch is crucial to a successful move.

Here are some ways to keep in touch after moving:

Facebook and social media
Admit it - even when you lived in the same town, Facebook was a big part of your relationships. Now that you’re moving away, it will most likely play an even larger role in keeping up with each others' antics. Pinterest is also a great way to share interests and hobbies. Instagram is a perfect way to keepi touch with friends who have a knack for snapping selfies and what they had for dinner. Use Twitter to share short updates, and upload videos of your new life on YouTube.

Skype and video chat
Phone calls are so 90's. There are so many alternative communication apps offering video calls and video conference calls, group chats, games and more on your smart phone and tablet, you need only take your pick. Check out Snapchat, Facetime, Skype, Viber, or Google Hangouts, and make it a habit to keep in touch at specific times. It’s easier to keep in touch when you make a schedule.

Blog about it
If you don’t already have a blog or a personal website, your moving experience is a great topic. Use free and easy platforms like Wordpress or Blogger to share your experiences and keep your loved ones involved in your day-to-day life.

Email
The same electronic correspondence you use for work probably seems like the least personal means of communication in existence. However, it is, in fact, one of the best ways to keep in touch. Emails are great because they can be long and in-depth, and allow you to share every detail of your day, week, or month, as you would over the phone. If you’re moving abroad, lengthy phone calls might be super expensive, and difficult to schedule, depending on the time difference. With emails, time isn’t of the essence.

Snail mail
There is no replacement for the hand written note. There’s something special about an actual letter waiting in your mailbox, postmarked on a certain date, from a certain state or country, and the unique penmanship of its writer. In this day and age of Facebooking and texting, standard mail isn’t the best choice to share breaking news or hot updates, but for detailed, “pour your heart out” messages, an old school letter is the perfect choice. You can also use snail mail to send birthday gifts and holiday cards. And if you’re moving overseas, send your friends a nice postcard! Just imagine their smile when they receive it.

Plan a trip
Homesickness is a natural side-effect of a long distance move. It takes time to find your feet and make new friends, and you might find yourself feeling lonesome at times. Planning a trip back home, or helping your loved ones plan a trip to you, or planning a getaway to a mutual place, can help alleviate homesickness. Booking tickets, letting friends know you’re coming and fantasizing about revisiting your favorite spots will give you something to focus on while you get settled in and adjust to your new life.
