Planning a move takes a lot of research, organization and preparation to be a success. Your relocation planning should follow a task timeline so you can stay on top of your move and avoid stress. Check out this easy to-do list (and infographic from our US sister site Movers.com!) so you know what to do and when for your upcoming move!

Two months before your move:

  •     Downsize your belongings. Get rid of extra junk to make it cheaper and easier to move.
  •     Create a packing inventory. Keep track of your belongings with an inventory sheet to stay organized as you pack.
  •     Compare moving quotes. Find a reliable and affordable mover by comparing quotes from several companies right here at TopMoving.ca!
One month before your move:
  •     Book your move date at least one month in advance --possibly sooner since it's peak moving season (May until September).
  •     Begin packing your belongings. Start with less often used rooms in your home (such as the dining room) so your packing duties don't disrupt your daily routine.
  •     Change your address. Make sure to notify the post office of your new address so you don’t miss any important mail, and contact utility companies to set up your connection and disconnection dates.
Two weeks before your move:
  •     Clean your home and make repairs. Make sure any important repairs are complete and your home is thoroughly cleaned for the new owners/tenants.
  •     Pack your first-night kit. You may be in your new home long before your shipment if you move long distance. Even if you move locally, you probably don't want to start unpacking your first night. Pack a bag with essentials like toiletries, pajamas, and a change of clothes.
  •     Set aside boxes you wish to transport yourself. Anything you aren’t putting on the moving truck, like valuables or important documents should be set aside so the movers don’t grab them on moving day.
One week before your move:
  •     Consume all perishable food. Avoid grocery shopping and look up recipes to make the most of your remaining food before you move.
  •     Get cash. You’ll need it for tipping the movers, and possible emergencies while travelling.
  •     Fill your prescriptions. Make sure you have an adequate supply of important medicines until you can find a new doctor in your new town.
