Moving During the Holidays

Moving during the holidays might not be an ideal situation, but it does happen. To combat extra stress amid the holiday season here are some tips to help you get through your move in one piece.

Finding a mover

Finding a moving company should be one of the first things on your to-do list whenever you're moving. Because moving season is generally during the warmer, summer months and early fall, you might not have too much trouble finding a moving company during the holiday and you may even find a better rate. But as with any time of year, you should continue your due diligence and properly vet any moving company you plan to hire BEFORE you sign any contracts.

Scheduling issues
The holidays are busy for everyone which leads to more cars on the roads and more people in the stores. With an increased amount of traffic, scheduling could become a concern for anyone who is planning a move which is why it's important to schedule things as soon as possible. Your moving company should be able to contact you at any point during the move in case of scheduling problems and delays.

If your friends and family are going to help you complete your move, be sure to inform everyone of your moving plans so that they know what your schedule is. Either way, your friends and family might not be seeing much of you during the holidays if you're going to be moving so try to let them down gently (and then celebrate privately).

Let it snow!
Because the weather cannot be predicted you need to plan for the worst but hope for the best. December and January moves can quickly become cold, snowy and wet with surprise blizzards and storms. To combat any damage to your items during the winter move, use the best packing materials you can to ensure that items stay dry while they're in transit and that they won't break if someone slips and falls on ice.

Check the weather reports often in the week and days before your upcoming holiday move. If you can take advantage of the days before a storm to move some items here and there that way, you won't be stuck trying to move everything you own mid-blizzard.

If you luck out and the storm passes before moving day, be sure to winterize both moving locations. Shovel out the walkways and parking areas, spread some salt on icy areas and place a few rugs or doormats near entry ways to stop some snow and salt from tracking inside.

Now that you've got some easy tips to move this holiday, heat up some cocoa and start packing. You've got a lot of work to do!
