After Your Move, Holidays
Have you recently moved long distance, leaving your family behind? Spending your first holiday season away from your loved ones can be lonely and difficult. If you're not feeling so festive this year, check out these helpful tips to make new traditions and enjoy the holiday.
Have dinner with a friend's family
If you have made new friends in your new city, find out what their plans are for the holiday. You'll likely be invited to attend a family gathering if your friends know you'd otherwise spend the day alone. While you may feel uncomfortable accepting the invite, your friend would likely not invite you if your presence wasn't truly desired. Be sure to bring a bottle of wine or dessert to the spread, and thank your gracious host for having you.
Arrange your own gathering with friendsSome of your peers likely live away from their families as well, and are probably looking to spend the holidays with someone. Reach out to acquaintances, co-workers, and other plan-less friends and invite everyone over for a potluck dinner at your place. You could even arrange a Secret Santa or grab bag gift swap to make the occasion even more festive. Don't feel like hosting the soiree at your place? Make reservations at a restaurant that's open for the holiday.
Connect with your familyWhile you may not be able to be there in the flesh, modern technology makes connecting with loved ones from afar simple. Hold a video chat with your family while they're having dinner, opening gifts, or enjoying any other family tradition you especially miss. While it won't be the same as being there in person, seeing your loved ones' faces and having a chance to catch up with them will surely make spending your first holiday away for them a little easier.
