Are you one of many Americans hoping to
move to Cape Breton if Donald Trump wins the presidential election? You're in luck, because the Canadian government plans to make it easier to move to the Great White North.
Changes to the Citizenship Act
Minister John McCallum passed
the new bill, which would remove "terrorism" and "other crimes against the national interest" as a reason for "revoking citizenship from dual nationals." It would also restore citizenship to anyone previously affected.
The bill also seeks to shorten the amount of time you would need to be physically present in Canada before qualifying -- from six years down to three -- and takes into account time already spent as permanent residents, which count toward the current requirement.
The government will also be returning to the age requirement of 18 to 54 and removing much of the controversial requirements added by Conservatives.
"Canadian citizens are equal under the law," McCallum said in a statement. "Whether they were born in Canada or were naturalized in Canada or hold dual citizenship."
