Breaking up is never easy to do, but it's even more complicated when you're living with your significant other. Unfortunately, these types of things happen. But while you may be better off without each other, you should at least try to maintain a civil relationship during the planning process of your move. Before jumping into anything, be sure to discuss the most important questions: Who will move out? Will one of you keep the apartment/house? Does one of you owe the other money? Once you've answered these crucial questions, you're well on your way to planning your breakup move.
Don't stay together because of your lease
If you still have a few months on your lease and money is tight, then you may have to make the best of the situation. If you've decided that breaking up is the best option, clarify that continuing to live together in the meantime is simply a logistical decision.
Form a plan, and give your partner time to make a plan
You should discuss the possibility of breaking up when you originally move in together. But, of course, many couples will avoid having this conversation. So, once you decide a breakup move is the best for both parties, try to plan ahead. You should also give your partner a chance to plan ahead as well. Prepare for your breakup move, or help your partner with his/her move, depending on who is leaving.
Like we mentioned above, it's important to figure out the answers to several questions. If you haven't already discussed your living situation with your partner, try to
create a breakup move plan as soon as possible. Here are the questions you should answer together:
- Who should move out?
- Should you both move out?
- How do you divide your belongings?
- How will you interact with one another after the breakup move is complete?
