12 Weird Canadian Laws You Probably Didn't Know Existed



Whether they're extremely antiquated or make little to no sense, Canadian provinces and territories are ripe with ridiculous laws that you may not even know about. Worried about breaking the law? Familiarize yourself with the twelve weird, strange and nonsensical rules below.

All provinces and territories

  • The Canadian Currency Act of 1985 has limited the number of coins you can use to pay for a single transaction. The maximum is $5 when paying in nickels and $25 for the loonie.
  • All liquor (with the exception of wine) requires permission from the liquor control board before being moved between provinces.
Alberta
  • Residents are forbidden from painting wooden ladders because it hides the ladder's condition.
New Brunswick
  • Wearing a snake or carrying a lizard on your shoulder in public is illegal in Fredericton -- unless that reptile is in a container.
Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Cows cannot be driven through the streets of St. John's after 8:00 AM, but before then it's totally cool?
Nova Scotia
  • Taxi-cab drivers in Halifax have an extremely strict dress code. According to bylaws, drivers "shall wear a shirt or military type blouse with a collar and sleeves (no T-shirts), ankle-length trousers, or dress shorts which are worn within at least three inches of the knee, socks and shoes."
Ontario
  • Skinny-dipping is illegal in Bancroft.
  • In London, grass cannot be taller than eight inches. If your grass exceeds this height, the city will mow it without your permission and then send you the bill.
  • Whistling and singing is prohibited at all times in Petrolia.
  • Dragging a dead horse down Yonge Street in Toronto is illegal on Sundays, so feel free to do it Monday through Saturday!
Prince Edward Island
  • Live on a corner lot in Souris? You should be aware that it's illegal to build snowmen taller than 30-inches.
Quebec
  • You are forbidden from using drinking water to melt ice or snow in Beaconsfield. Similarly, you can only wash driveways, sidewalks and patios from April 1 to May 15.
