Best Foods to Try in Canada

Whether you’re moving to Canada or just visiting, there are some food dishes that you definitely need to try. Every country has their own signature dishes that embraces that country and Canada is no different. To fully embrace the Canadian experience, here are the best foods to try in Canada.

Poutine

These are probably the most popular Canadian side dish. Poutine is a dish that consists of French fries topped with gravy and cheese curds. No meal would complete without a side of poutine. If you want to get crazy, you can add bacon or another type of meat.

Tourtière
Winter is coming and nothing is better than a nice hearty meal on a cold winter night. Tourtière is perfect for exactly that reason. Tourtière tends to have pork, onions, and spices (like cinnamon and cloves). The great thing about this meal is that you can customize it however you want. You can add veggies or potatoes. As long as it’s in the pie crust with meat, it’s considered tourtière.

Nanaimo bars
We talked about a side dish and a main entrée, now for desserts. Nanaimo bars consist of three layers: a crunchy base (graham cracker crumbs or chopped nuts), a custard middle part, and a chocolate top layer. If you want to make it at home, you can add peanut butter or maple syrup to the custard layer for a unique spin.

Montreal bagels
If you’re from the United States, you may overlook bagels in Canadian. They are a little smaller with larger holes than American bagels. But there are strict rules when it comes to Montreal bagels. They must be handmade, poached in honey-infused water, and cooked in a wood-burning oven.

Bloody Caesar
To accompany your bagels, you should drink a Bloody Caesar. It’s similar to a Bloody Mary but instead of a tomato base, it’s a clamato juice base. Clamato is a mixture of tomato and clam juice. It’s also the national drink of Canada. There is even a holiday for the drink. It falls on the Thursday before the May 2-4 long weekend and it’s also the unofficial kick-off to summer.
