Tips for Insulating Your Home

Need some tips to help insulate your home this winter? Try some of these easy fixes to help your home stay cozy and warm and your utility bills low.

Find and block drafty windows and doors

Drafty windows are often the culprit when it comes to chilly living rooms. Don't suffer in silence though, instead fill up any drafty window frames with insulation to keep the cold winter winds from creeping inside. If you're unable to add more insulation around your window frame, consider purchasing a window film to seal it. The clear film goes around the edges of the window frame and blocks air from coming inside. These window covers also help keep your heat inside where it belongs.

Drafty doors are even simpler to fix. There's usually a gap between the bottom of the door and the floor, which is where the draft is likely coming from so either visit your local hardware store and purchase some draft blockers or make one yourself using some foam or some long stockings or tights filled with rice (or some other filler) tied on both ends. The point is to block as much air as you can from coming in or going out under the door.

Add insulation to your attic
If you have an attic, you might be losing a lot of heat through your roof. Head up to your attic and if you can see the ceiling joists, then you should add more insulation. Add more insulation until the ceiling joists and beams aren't really visible anymore and you should soon start to see an improvement in your home's heat retention.

Add area rugs around your home
Area rugs not only add a bit of decor to your home but they also add a bit more comfort. Area rugs will help retain heat throughout your home and add a bit of comfort when you're walking around barefoot if you have hard floors. Go for a cozy high pile and ultra-plush area rug to get the best bang for your buck.
