How to Deal with Fleas in Your HomeEven if you’re being cautious, your furry friends could still get fleas. Fleas can attach to your pets even if they aren’t outdoor pets. Fleas could attach to your pants or shoes and then hop onto your pets. If you’ve been noticing that your pet has been scratching excessively, you should take a look and check for fleas. You can buy a flea comb and just push back your pet’s fur. If you see little black dots running around, your pet has fleas. Fleas are a headache to deal with. But here at TopMoving.ca, we are here to help you deal with the menaces.

Bathe your pets

Your first step to having a flea-free home is to bathe your pets with a gentle shampoo or a commercial flea dip. The fleas are unable to hold on your pet’s hair, so they will fall off and drown in the water. After you wash them, comb them with a flea comb. A flea comb is important because the way the bristles are positioned can capture the fleas. You may have to do a few treatments to get rid of all the fleas.

Buy flea medication
Visit your vet about getting some oral and topical medications. These medications will help get rid of current fleas and help avoid fleas in the future. Make sure you’re doing the correct dosage for the size of your pet. Also, never give your dog flea medication that is meant for cats and vice versa. They could overdose or have problems with their nervous system.

Wash any cloth
It’s a good idea to wash any bedding that your pets could have laid on, like their bed and yours. The wash won’t get rid of the fleas but the dry cycle will. Then, put these items in plastic bags until after your house is rid of the fleas.

Continue treatment every 30 days
Try and keep your pet in as much as possible for the next 30 days. You should also continue to do a flea preventative treatments every 30 days, just to make sure. With the flea medication, any fleas that jump onto your pet will die.

Flea bomb your home
The best way to get rid of any remaining fleas or flea eggs is to buy a flea control spray, flea fogger, or flea bomb. Make sure to buy products that will also kill flea eggs. If you don’t, the eggs will hatch and you’ll have flea problem again in a few weeks. With a flea spray, make sure to spray the following:
  • Carpets
  • Rugs
  • Furniture
  • Baseboards
  • Walls
  • Everywhere the fogger can’t reach
You should repeat this treatment after two weeks. Some fleas may be in cocoons where the insecticides can’t reach them. Doing the treatment after two weeks with ensure that you will fill all future fleas.

Clean and treat your yard
You’ll want to clean your floors thoroughly. You’ll want to vacuum your carpets, rugs, and upholstery. You should also put a chopped up flea collar in the vacuum bag to kill them as soon as you suck them up. Your vacuum will suck up fleas, eggs, and larvae. It will also cause fleas to hatch from their cocoons. Make sure to mop your hardwood or linoleum floors as well.  If your pets spend a lot of time outdoors, you need to make sure to treat your lawn as well. You need to remove debris and mow your lawn. Spray all shaded and partially shaded area. Don’t forget to spray the dog house!
